Bangalore, the silicon city has yet another feather in its cap. And this by no standards is a mean achievement. Bangalore or "Bengaluru" as it is presently known has a new international airport - The Bengaluru International Airport. The airport is owned and operated by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL). The construction work for the new airport began in Jul 2005 and the dedicated efforts by the concerned authorities has ensured that the airport has been able to start operations on the 23rd of May 2008. The project is one that has been completed in less than 3 years time.

The Bengaluru International airport is spread over an area of over 4,050 acres and confirms to international standards in every way. It is modernization at its very best and offers a facility that is one of the best in the country.

The airport a private collaboration venture is one that paves way to a new trend. It is a symbol of sustained and dedicated efforts that have borne fruit and marks the beginning for further progress and development in the country as a whole.

Situated at a distance of 40 kms from the heart of the city the Bengaluru International Airport is located at "Devanahalli". It has replaced the existing HAL Bangalore International Airport and is definitely a step ahead in time. There are further expansion plans that are proposed to keep pace with time and the growing requirements. The airport aims at making air travel both convenient and comfortable to the traveler.

The next stage of work involves addition of runway and also other facilities like business centers, a luxury hotel and shops. Facilities of increased number of aircraft stands and support facilities is all part of the package. Plans are underway and are at various stages of execution. The airport can cater to as many as 12 million passengers annually and is further estimated to cater to over 18 million passengers annually.

There have been issues raised by some citizen groups regarding the distance of the airport from the city. There are questions raised regarding the problems of commuting to the airport and that too, during peak traffic hours. However the Government has a solution ready for this too. An express rail service to the airport, luxury buses plying up and down and even helicopter services are offered keeping in mind the convenience and budget of the different segments of passengers. The National Highway is also going through a widening process in order to cater to the increased traffic flow expected with the beginning of the operations at the new airport.
